Presidential Office bans No land! No Vote! March!!!

Urgent Press Briefing to day, 06 November 2003 @ 12h30pm!

The Tshwane Metro police informed the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) that their planned march to President Thabo Mbeki has been banned! This decision was communicated during a meeting between the LPM delegation and Metro police representatives this morning in Pretoria. The Metro police where represented by Inspectors Brits, Lebese and Ratua.

During meeting Inspector Lebese received a telephone call apparently from the President’s office were he assured the person that the march is being banned, We know from our telephone conversations with Lebese that he has been in touch with the Presidents office, now amongst the reasons given for the banning of the march is that the Presidents office has not given the LPM written confirmation of the march, this is despite the fact the LPM informed the President’s office well in advance about the march. The LPM sees the decision to refuse the march as nothing but a desperate attempt to deny us our fundamental right to assembly as enshrined our bill of rights.

The media is invited to an in-depth Press Briefing and immediate actions to be undertaken:
