AFTER 50 YEARS OF YANKEE INTERVENTION; FED UP WITH BEING SILENCED; WE TAKE WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS AND RAISE OUR VOICES IN PROTEST!

We take this space today – young people, men and women – tired of the injustices and the denial of our existence. With this action, we reject a State that excludes the majority of the population, and that maintains and perpetuates the social, economic, political, and military structures that increase the levels of poverty, violence and inequality.

Today we remember what the Yankee intervention left us: military governments imposed from the North; entire communities of our people subjected to bullets, terror, savagery; the humiliation of the scorched earth policy; and young people, students, unionists and professionals silenced for expressing their thoughts.

Ever since, the earth has held deep within its bowels, the remains of those who dared to dream and tried to effect change in a Guatemala. A Guatemala more and more battered by not only bullets, but also hunger, cold, diarrhea, malaria, slavery, and a nomadic, meager life imposed by those comfortable, Spanish and German families with “good names”, those who always valued the genocidal and traitorous armies who subjugated our brothers and sisters.

Guatemala continues being a silenced country; a country cut off by the manipulation of the truth, by the repression of free expression, opinion, information, and thought that does not allow our true participation in current political and social processes.

The current closing of opportunities for open participation, expression and proposal affects all of society. But above all, this affects young people who have an increasing need to influence and generate alternative ways of organizing that allows free expression, giving all a voice and the ability to denounce, demand, and make proposals.

From this Occupied Space we denounce:

• The closure of and lack of space for organizing, participating, learning, educating, and expressing;
• The usurpation of our lands by national and international monopolies, militaries, and oligarchs;
• Violent and illegal evictions of peasant and indigenous communities in both rural and urban areas;
• The plundering of our resources and the forced displacement of our people due to the implementation of economic projects and international energy companies;
• The presence of U.S. troops and their weaponry in a number of communities in our country;
• The attitude of the current oligarchic government that accepts the war-oriented policies of the White House but pretends to reduce the army while re-arming it against popular, peasant, and indigenous movements that oppose and organize against the economic and military plans imposed from the North;
• The creation of more taxes by the government which affect the majority of the population and denies the fact that it is the rich of this country who should be paying more so that there is a higher level of investment in social programs.
