Congratulations to our Clajadep on its opening fiesta
on the eve of May Day!
Growing up I always thought that May Day was some
sort of ominous military
day in the Soviet Union, with tanks and missiles
rolling into Red Square.
It was years later that I learned that the origin
of May Day was right
here in the USA in commemoration of the struggle
for the 8 hour work day,
and the frame up of eight anarchists for the
bombing of police in
Haymarket Square in Chicago.
You would think that an historic event with such
broad international
implications would be taught in every classroom
in the US, but you would
be wrong. You would also think that the North
American labor movement
would be marching in international solidarity.
Wrong again! You might
even think that 117 years later we would be
talking about a 30-hour work
week. Oops…sorry…you lose!
In order for me to even start the process of
learning about the country in
which I was born it was necessary for me to leave
it’s borders. Later, in
1983 I had occasion to go to Nicaragua. There, I
struck up a conversation
with a 12 or 13 year old.. Learning that I was a
Gringa he immediately
started telling me about his admiration for the
Haymarket martyrs. I
still have a picture of myself staring in
stupefaction as that kid
explained my own history to me!
With the complicity of organized labor, the
ruling class moved Labor Day
to September in an effort to erase our collective
memory, but people
around the country are struggling to reclaim our
true history. Here in
the Capital District of upstate New York a group
of labor activists and
others are holding the 5th annual May Day
celebration. The title this
year is “Labor and War”. The meeting will be
held in Schenectady N.Y.
which is the birthplace of General Electric, the
most profitable global
corporation in the world. Schenectady has a
rich history of labor
struggle, but today it is just one more upstate
postindustrial city with a
boarded up downtown and a booming industry of
prostitution and drug
trafficking. Travelling through Schenectady one
sees stickers everywhere
that say “Blame GE”.
Similar activities, meetings and marches are will
be held in cities around
the country in remembrance of our stolen history
and in international
solidarity.
Once again, congratulations to Clajadep, and
greetings and solidarity to
its contributors and readers. On this May Day
2003 I would like to send a
special message of solidarity to the people of
Argentina. If you touch
one of us you touch us all!

¡Felicitaciones a nuestra Clajadep en su fiesta en la
víspera del primero de
mayo! Creciendo siempre pensaba que el primero
de mayo era una clase
de día militar siniestro en la unión soviética,
con los tanques y los
misiles rodando en el cuadrado rojo. Era mucho
mas luego cuando aprendí
que el origen del primero de mayo fue aquí mismo
en los E.E.U.U. en
commemoration de la lucha para un horario de
trabajo de 8 horas, y la
incriminacion falsa de ocho anarquistas para el
bombardeo del policía en
el cuadrado de Haymarket en Chicago.
Ustedes pensarían que un acontecimiento
histórico con tales amplias
implicaciones internacionales sería enseñado en
cada sala de clase en los
E.E.U.U., pero ustedes serían equivocados.
Ustedes también pensarían que
el movimiento de trabajo norteamericano estaría
marchando en solidaridad
internacional. ¡Mal otra vez! Ustedes hasta
pensarian que 117 años más
luego estaríamos hablando de un horario del
trabajo de 30 horas
semenales. Oops…muy apesadumbrada… ustedes
pierden!
En mi caso para empezar el proceso de aprender
sobre el país en el cual
nací era necesario salir de sus fronteras.
Luego, en 1983 tenía ocasión a
ir a Nicaragua. Allí, me puse a conversar con un
muchacho de 12 o 13
años. Al aprender que era una Gringa él comenzó
inmediatamente a decirme
sobre su admiración para los martires de
Haymarket. ¡Todavía tengo un
foto de me mirandole fijamente en estupefaccion
mientras ese cabrito me
explicó mi propia historia a mí!
Con la complicidad del trabajo organizado, la
clase dominante movió el día
de trabajo a septiembre en un esfuerzo de borrar
nuestra memoria
colectiva, pero hay gente en todas partes
luchando para reclamar nuestra
historia verdadera. Aquí en el districto capital
del Nueva York un grupo
de activistas laborales y otros estámos
celebrando la 5ta reunion anual
del primero de mayo. El título este año es
“trabajo y guerra”. La
reunión será celebrada en Schenectady N.Y. donde
nacio General Electric,
la corporación global más provechosa del mundo.
Schenectady tiene una
historia rica de la lucha de trabajo, pero hoy no
es mas que otra ciudad
post-industrial de la region con el centro vacio
y cerrado y una industria
creciente de la prostitución y de tráficos de
droga. Andando por
Schenectady se ve etiquetas engomadas por todas
partes que dicen “GE
tiene la culpa”.
Habran actividades parecidas por todo el pais
para recordar la historia
robada y en solidaridad internacional.
De nuevo, felicitaciones a Clajadep, y saludos
y solidaridad a sus
contribuidores y lectores. En este primero de
mayo de 2003 quisiera
enviar un mensaje especial de la solidaridad
los que luchan en
Argentina. ¡Si toca a uno, nos toca a todos!
